The introduction of Globodera<\/em> in Europe<\/strong> dates back to the 19th century, around 1850<\/strong>, when potato cultivars resistant to downy mildew (Phytophthora infestans<\/em><\/strong>) were imported from South America. Paradoxically, this measure to combat one potato disease facilitated the spread of another devastating pest. Since then, both species have continued to spread in Europe and other parts of the world<\/strong>. <\/p>

Cyst nematodes<\/strong> of this genus are characterized by the formation of rounded cysts<\/strong>, which distinguishes them from other nematodes of the family Heteroderidae <\/strong>(Figure 1) . <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

G. pallida<\/em> and G. rostochiensis<\/em> are very similar<\/strong>, making them difficult to identify. In their early stages, they can be differentiated by their color, but as they mature, they adopt a brownish hue. For accurate identification, morphometric and molecular techniques<\/strong> are necessary. <\/p>

In addition, these two species have different pathotypes<\/strong>, which influences their reproductive capacity depending on the host solanaceae variety<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Cyst nematodes of the genus Globodera<\/em><\/strong> mainly affect crops of the Solanaceae<\/strong> family, as these plants release root exudates<\/strong> that activate the hatching of juveniles present in root cysts.<\/p>

The most affected crop<\/strong> is potato (Solanum tuberosum<\/em>)<\/strong>, but other Solanaceae such as tomato (Solanum lycopersicum<\/em>)<\/strong> and eggplant (Solanum melongena<\/em>)<\/strong> can also be infected .<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
